Traveling Tips for Post-Pandemic Times- what to do before, during, and after the trip?

by Wasifa Ahmad Hasan

This 4th of July weekend, we took a short trip to the neighboring big city, Minneapolis. Though it’s a short trip (4-5 hours drive), we had to take extra cautions before, during, and after the trip. As traveling is slowly beginning to resume, with so many different restrictions in place and the threat of new variants on the rise, it can be difficult for travelers to know where it’s safe to travel during the post-pandemic era. If you’re planning a trip, here are the essential traveling tips for post-pandemic times.

Traveling Tips for Post-Pandemic Times:

Before Travelling

1. Plan Ahead

Start your trip by doing some research on your chosen destination. Check the official government websites for both your country of origin and your chosen destination to find out about any requirements in place. You can also use websites, such as Sherpa, which lists the countries U.S. travelers can visit, as well as important policies that you need to know about, including masking and social distancing guidelines, quarantine and testing requirements, and testing locations.

If you’re unsure of the precise requirements, talk to a professional travel advisor. They will be able to provide you with the latest information and offer valuable support to help make your trip less stressful.

2. Choose A Safe Location

Nowhere is fully safe from Covid-19. However, some destinations are safer than others. Therefore, when planning your trip, carefully research your destination and make sure that you’re selective in your choice. Instead of settling for the most fun or cheapest location, factor in whether there are safety protocols in place for dealing with the pandemic.

Research the number of cases in your preferred destination, as well as what safety protocols they have put in place to resume tourism safely. For example, consider whether there are testing or entry requirements and if social distancing measures and masking protocols are in place. Such measures will help to ensure health and safety during your trip.

3. Get Travel Insurance

It’s worth bearing in mind that changes in local and national restrictions may come into force suddenly, forcing you to change your plans at the last minute or cancel your trip altogether. As such, it’s more important than ever to make sure that you have travel insurance.

When planning and booking your trip, ensure you purchase insurance that adequately covers all your needs, particularly cancellations. Ideally, it would be best to purchase your travel insurance as soon as possible to enable you to recoup as much of your expenses as possible.

It’s also important to check that your insurance covers any potential medical expenses and emergencies. In particular, try to find insurance plans that offer 24/7 travel assistance and provide you with up-to-date travel advice, including risk ratings and security alerts.

Here are some cool options to carry your travel documents, passports, etc. :

During Your Trip

If you’re traveling by plane, try to book a window seat and avoid getting up and walking around during your flight. This will help to minimize your chances of catching an illness whilst on board. Ideally, try to book with an airline that blocks the middle seats to help maintain better social distancing. In addition, keep your mask on throughout your journey, including in the airport and lobby, and wipe down communal surfaces using disinfectant wipes, such as the tray table or in-flight entertainment system

Once you’re on your trip, remain vigilant and up-to-date with the latest information for your location. Be aware of any local hotspots or outbreaks and any changes to guidelines. If any venues or tourist attractions appear not to have safety guidance in place, lack monitoring technology, or lack cleanliness, it’s best to avoid them and keep yourself safe.

Even if you’re fully vaccinated, make sure that you adhere to mask-wearing and social distancing guidance. Ensure that you continue to wash your hands regularly and carry hand sanitizer with you, with at least 60% alcohol content. Above all, make sure that you have a plan in place if you or anyone in your party falls ill during your trip. Be prepared for all eventualities and know where the nearest healthcare providers are.

After Your Trip

Upon your return, follow through with any required testing or quarantine protocols. Even if you haven’t got any symptoms or are fully vaccinated, it’s still possible for you to catch the virus or transmit it to others. Therefore, if you have a positive test result, make sure that you report it at once. In addition, ensure that you continue to follow all the masking and social distancing guidelines upon your return and continue to practice good hygiene.
