Cleanliness is next to godliness, right? We make sure our homes are clean, clothes washed and ironed, hair sparkling clean, our makeup flawless, but what about the tools that make it all happen? Believe it or not, your makeup and its sidekicks are due for a cleaning spree more often than you might think, and luckily, we are here with pearls of wisdom, so start taking notes and start following these steps.

Take care of makeup’s little helpers

Yes, by these we mean those lovely foundation, bronzer, setting and blush brushes and the inevitable beauty blenders sitting upright in a container on your makeup table, waiting to be noticed.

While you may use them almost daily, how often do you show them some soapy love and give them a good wash? It may come as a surprise, but these little sidekicks need to be washed more frequently than you think. For example, eye shadow brushes are due every two weeks, and your foundation brush deserves a treatment as frequently as your hair – two to three times a week. Perhaps that can be a reminder, every time you wash your hair, bring that brush along and kill two birds with one stone.

Now, let us talk about the beauty blender. This tool gathers bacteria quicker than all the other crew members, so the smartest thing to do, in order to avoid passing the bacteria onto your face, (which can cause inflammation, breakouts, etc.) is to wash this little fella before every next usage. This way, you will always have a damp beauty blender, and that is exactly how you need it in order to apply that foundation right. Good Housekeeping is here with a step-by-step guide on how to do this properly, so hop to it; your brushes are looking at you with pleading eyes.

Everything has a shelf life

This is the time when you should open your makeup bag and start editing mercilessly. Unfortunately, even the best and most expensive products have an expiration date, and just as you would not drink the milk that has gone bad, you should not allow anything expired to come within five feet of your face.

You might feel reluctant to say goodbye to your favorite eye shadow palette, or your perfect shade of lipstick, but a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do. You will get over it, or better yet, this gives you the perfect excuse to head to a makeup store and treat yourself with brand-new goodies. With the ways the trends are changing, you might even find an upgraded version of something you used to own or a shade of lipstick that is more in style this season.

Out with the old, in with the healthier

Once you are done with the cleaning and the editing, it is time to reconsider your skincare choices. While makeup serves to enhance your features and sometimes hide a few imperfections, you are well aware that the only way to truly healthy skin is through proper skincare.

If you have been picking random toners, cleansers and moisturizers from drugstore shelves, completely oblivious of their potentially harmful ingredients, not to mention the possibility that you might have been picking the wrong product for your skin type, it is time to stop.

Your face is precious and it should get extraordinary care. Visit a dermatologist, or consult a beautician, determine your skin type, and from there, head to a quality online makeup store, carefully revise all the ingredients and make smart and healthy purchases. Look for natural ingredients that will not harm your skin, and also be on the lookout for dermatologically tested skincare. You deserve this.

You are only three easy steps away from a brand-new beauty routine – rinse, edit and re-stock. It is not that hard, is it? And your face will be eternally grateful, and so will the sparkling clean bristles of your brushes. Start today for a brighter skin tomorrow, you’ve got this!
