Capsule Wardrobe-The 7 Easiest Mistakes Beginner’s Make (& How to Avoid These)

by Wasifa Ahmad Hasan

Have you come across the term Capsule Wardrobe? Personally, I love the concept, and I have been doing this for as long as I can remember without even knowing about the term. It makes the whole “getting ready” process easier; it’s also cost-effective and helpful for people who often get confused about “what to wear.”

A capsule wardrobe is an organizational tool and fashion-forward idea that has been popularised over the past five or so years. Of course, its actuality depends on the person using the idea, but in short, it represents a smaller collection of basic fashion pieces that can be transformed in different combinations with each other for different situations and environments.

Most people do a capsule for each season in a year. The thought process behind a capsule wardrobe is that its items are better and more all-time quality. This will reduce the impact your wardrobe has on the environment and your wallet. It is also designed to make the day-to-day outfit-choosing process less stressful and easier. So overall, this is an excellent idea, and today we will talk about some common mistakes you can avoid to make your capsule wardrobe perfect!

Capsule Wardrobe: Which mistakes to avoid?

1: You are Unsure of your Personal Style

Capsule wardrobes are only achievable if you are sure of your own personal style and how you like to dress. If you find yourself struggling to like what’s in your capsule consistently, you may be switching between styles or not be sure or set on your own way of dressing yet. Although it is normal to fluctuate sometimes, a capsule wardrobe scheme only really works if you are relatively sure of yourself and your personal style. Therefore, it is important to figure your own style out before trying to construct a capsule wardrobe.

2: Your Clothes are Trend-Based

Although it is normal to follow trends sometimes, it is ineffective to have an entirely trend-led wardrobe. Capsule wardrobes are based on classic pieces that are always going to be in style. Dividing your wardrobe into 80% classics and 20% trends is usually a good way to avoid being taken over by trends. Trend-based wardrobes don’t make good capsule wardrobes because they change too often with the times.

3: Boring Wardrobe Choices

As much as it is important to not steer too far to the trendy side of fashion, it is also important to avoid the opposite. Try to avoid being beige and safe with all of your fashion choices. You will get bored and stop enjoying your capsule wardrobe if your fashion is all the same and monotonous. Accessorizing helps avoid boredom in capsule wardrobing.

4: Missing Quality in your Wardrobe

The whole point of a capsule wardrobe is to find good-quality pieces that last a long time. If there is no longevity and quality in your wardrobe, you might as well be going by a normal wardrobe because you’ll be replacing clothes just as much. Invest in fewer clothing items but with a higher level of quality, and you will find that you are spending less money overall because of the quality of your clothes. Don’t go cheap.

5: Too Many (Unattainable) Rules

Although rules and guidelines are important for setting up a capsule wardrobe, give yourself some grace by setting realistic and attainable goals. We all have to start somewhere. So start with a looser goal for your capsule wardrobe, and reduce and get stricter on yourself as you go.  Remember to enjoy the process, and if it sucks all the fun out of dressing up, maybe you need to change the rules!

6: Copying Someone Else’s Plan

Every person is different, so every wardrobe is different. Try not to copy someone else’s capsule plan. What works for your best friend or your favorite influencer may not work for you. You have your own personal style, so follow the influencers for inspiration and create a system that works for you.

7: Striving for Perfection

It is a silly goal to strive for constant perfection in anything, especially capsule wardrobing. However, it is essential with any first-time goal not to put too much pressure on yourself. Absolute perfection is unattainable and will only make you stressed out and potentially make you give up on your goal.

Strive for improvement, not perfection. Every year, adjust your goals. Give yourself new challenges, take out what’s not working and add something fun. Explore your personal style, how to find styles that flatter your body and how to find your right fit.

A capsule wardrobe is a fantastic way to ease up your impact on the environment and your own wallet as well. It is a system that must be constantly adjusted and personalized to every person that uses it and cannot be seen as a “one size fits all” solution for anything. However, the overall principle of a capsule wardrobe is to be economical with time, money, and fashion stress.
