5 Luxurious Hair Oils for Heat Styling (you need to try!)

by Wasifa Ahmad Hasan

Gone are the days when hair oil meant slapping coconut oil on your head and make a greasy mess. Nowadays hair oil is a luxury and a hair style statement. For today’s article, I am listing down 5 luxurious hair oils which can be used before heat styling or just after styling (and you need to try these at least once!)

Without any particular order, the products featured are:

  • Shu Uemura essence absolue nourishing protective hair oil
  • Redken Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine
  • Rahua Legendary Amazon Oil
  • Kerastase Elixir Ultime Volume Beautifying Oil Mist
  • Moroccanoil Oil Treatment-Original

5 Hair Oils for Heat Styling- Overview:

These oils are on the pricier side (as indicated in the caption) and used as a treatment or styling product. You will be needing a small amount of these products for your hair, so use a light hand or else you will find your hair has turned into a greasy mess. I have been using some of these products for more than 2 years (i.e. the Redken one), so if you feel stuck on the price-point of these, keep on reading to see why I am recommending these.

5 Luxurious Hair Oils for Heat Styling

Shu Uemura essence absolue nourishing protective hair oil:

This product is award-winning hair oil. It smells wonderful and definitely pricey. But a little goes a long way!

It claims to moisturize and protect hair with intense nutrition. Camellia Oil absorbs rapidly, deep into the hair’s cortex, leaving it soft and silky with high shine. This velvety hair oil rebalances the hair’s moisture level and provides all-day UV protection without weighing down even the finest of hair. Formulated for daily use. Safe on color-treated hair.

If you look at the ingredient list, you will notice it has silicones. So use it in moderation. Apply 1 pump to your hands and work through hair from mid-lengths to ends before a blowout. You will be left with soft, silky and beautifully smelling hair!

It retails for $66 and you can find it on Amazon.

Redken Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine:

I was so disappointed when this product got discontinued! Though you can still get it on some Amazon pages. I use it from time to time as the final product to get an intense shine to my hair. Redken recommends Diamond Oil Glow Dry to replace this one. (*crying internally!*). It has silicones, so I use it before heat styling for maximum shine.

I was recommended this oil by my hairstylist 5 years ago. She used it after blowdrying my hair and I loved how shiny it made my hair!

It retails for $27 and found online here.

Rahua Legendary Amazon Oil:

I started using this oil from this year and I was super impressed! This award-winning oil is free of sulfates SLS and SLES, parabens, formaldehydes, formaldehyde-releasing agents, phthalates, mineral oil, retinyl palmitate, oxybenzone, coal tar, hydroquinone, triclosan, and triclocarban, and contains less than one percent of synthetic fragrances. This product is also vegan, cruelty-free, and gluten-free.

This exclusive Rahua® blend uses light-as-air plant and flower oils—not silicones—to deliver a beautifully smooth, shiny, anti-frizz finish. Rahua, Sacha Inchi, and Morete oils harvested in the Amazon penetrate deeply into each hair strand to heal and strengthen. A powerful way to banish flyaways, heal split ends, and promote shine, this formula is quick absorbing and remarkably revitalizing. Formulated especially for daily use.

Sometimes when I feel my daughter’s curls are getting really dry, I will take 2 drops and apply it on the ends of her damp hair. It becomes soft, bouncy and shiny again! For my hair, I will use it after my curly hair is completely dry with a gel cast. I will take 2-3 pumps in my palms and scrunch out the crunch. (I will make a separate article on more about these curly-hair terms and techniques.)

This can be used on Fine, Medium, and Thick straight, wavy or curly hair. I am using this particular oil more nowadays after getting serious about taking better care of my curls. So if you want to try just ONE oil from my list, try this one.

Retails for $42 and can be found on Sephora, Amazon.

Kerastase Elixir Ultime Volume Beautifying Oil Mist:

This product claims to:

It expands thickness and volume with ultimate shine and lightweight softness. This has all the nourishing benefits of hair oils without being weighed down. This has a blend of four precious scented oils ideal for fine to normal hair types. Maize Oil: Delivers emollient and anti-oxidant active ingredients for ultimate shine. Pracaxi Oil: Brings shine, nourishment and deep conditioning to the hair. Camellia Oil: Helps smooth the hair fiber, resulting in incredible shine. Argan Oil: Helps restore strength to the hair and protects it from external aggressors.

This is a volume-enhancing bi-phase oil mist which works well on thin hair. Just shake the bottle well and use a small amount on the ends of hair after styling (or before).

It retails around $30-40 and found at Walmart. Amazon.

Moroccanoil Oil Treatment-Original:

Another award-winning product, Moroccanoil Treatment can be used as a conditioning, styling and finishing tool. Infused with antioxidant-rich argan oil and shine-boosting vitamins, this completely transformative hair treatment detangles, speeds up drying time and boosts shine—leaving you with nourished, manageable and smooth hair with each use. Outshine the rest.

This oil is good for medium to thick texture. It’s very thick so as I mentioned before, use a light hand. As it contains dimethicone I will suggest to use it for heat styling as opposed to every day.

It retails for $32 and can be found at Walmart. Amazon.

In A Nutshell:

Many of these oils have silicones/dimethicones (apart from Rahua) which coat the surface of the hair to make them smooth, shiny, and to protect from heat. Continued use of silicones or dimethicones can weigh down your hair, so to prevent that- regularly wash your hair to remove build up.
