Summer Hair Care: 8 Tips You Should Follow

by Wasifa Ahmad Hasan

Summer is “that” time of the year when you need to take more care of your hair. If you ignore to follow some simple rules, the hair will be a dry, discolored mess. There are a number of steps you can follow for beautiful hair during warmer months.
These will help you protect it from the heat, humidity and maintain the health. So here I am today talking about 8 steps which will show you how to properly care for your hair in the Summer.

1. Cover up

Make sure you are using a scarf or a hat to help you cover the head especially if you are out and exposed to the sun. This is the best way for you to ensure that you are totally protected against the UV rays. This will protect the scalp by retraining the moisture and natural oil, as well as protect color treated hair thus giving your hair the best conditions. The hat or scarf will help in reducing the damage which may be caused by wind. This is useful to those whose hair is prone to tangling.

2. Put the hair up especially in loose comfortable styles

Love to do your hair-do extra tight? The tight kind of hairstyles is more damaging since they will pull as well tear the hair. The heat and sweat around scalp in summer months will cause dandruff, itchy scalp if you are always putting your hair is tight ponytail of buns. So opt for loose braids so that your scalp can breathe. Here you can see some easy hairstyles for summer.

3. Wash less

When you do the frequent washing, it strips the scalp from its natural oils. In this scenario, your scalp increases oil production which results in washing the hair more. Make sure you are using the right shampoo for your hair needs. If you have bleached hair, use a purple or silver shampoo to keep brassiness away.

4. Reducing the heat

Try to avoid blow-drying as much as possible. Take advantage of the weather and your natural texture. Choose air-drying instead. Use a salt spray to bring out the waves and texture and flaunt a beachy-wavy style in the summer months.

5. Use Oils

A couple of drops of coconut, argan, avocado, almond oil work wonders on hair. If you have silky fine hair add a very little amount of oil only on the ends, but if you have curly hair add the oil from your ear area to the ends. You will find some of the hair products I love for Summer in my previous post here.

6. Conditioner/hair mask is your friend

I can’t stress this enough, use a conditioner whenever you wash your hair. The amount depends on your hair condition and type. Use a hair at least every 10 days for some extra moisture to your hair. You can also use a natural conditioning treatment.

7. Reduce swimmer’s hair

If you like to swim often, you probably have faced the discoloration and dullness that happens due to swimming. So you can add apple cider vinegar and some water and spritz it on your hair for a DIY approach. Or you can use clarifying shampoos like Paul Mitchell Three Clarifying Shampoo to get rid of the chlorine from hair. Here are other options for clarifying shampoos.

8. Add the bit of sunscreen

There are many sun protectants for hair available nowadays. When you apply the sunscreen to make sure that you run your hands on the hair.  Here are some of the products I recommend.

I hope you find the above tips useful. Enjoy a safe sun this Summer and flaunt your beautiful hair!
