Review: bareMinerals Bareskin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation

by Wasifa Ahmad Hasan

Hey ladies!
Have you tried the new Bareskin serum foundation from bareMinerals? I just got it from Ulta. It comes with a flat top brush which is optional. I didn’t get the brush though. It can be used with any flat top kabuki brush, or you can also use beautyblender. But I prefer Real Techniques flat top brush.

Here’s what the company has to say about this product:

“Clinically proven tone-correcting mineral foundation and brightening serum in one. Created with exceptional purity in mind, this ultra-thin, skin-perfecting fluid provides seamless adjustable coverage, a natural finish and the look and feel of beautiful skin while delivering a noticeably brighter, more youthful appearance. Made with the bare minimum ingredients and formulated without oil, silicone, parabens or fragrance. It’s like nothing you’ve ever felt before.”

Without further ado, let me share my experience with this product.

This foundation comes in 20 shades. My shade is no 10- Bare Buff. It’s a yellow or golden under-toned foundation for medium skin.
The foundation comes in a sturdy plastic bottle….which is great for travel.
As you can see below, here is how the bottle looks like. You have to shake the product well before use. The bottle comes with a dropper. I have found that you have to squeeze the bottle really well to get the product out, which is a plus point in my opinion…because there won’t be any chance for the product to ooze out.
As for the consistency; the product’s formula is liquid-y with buildable coverage. The formula reminds me of MAC Face & Body foundation.
Though the formula seems same to me as MAC Face & Body, the main difference is in the finish. Face & Body is dewy and leaves a sheen or a dewy finish on the skin even after it sets, which is somewhat undesirable for oily skin.
After applying bareMinerals Bareskin I have found that it is also dewy, BUT if you give it some time to set it gives a nice “dewy-matte” finish..which is not as dewy as Face & Body but also not totally matte.. [I donno if it makes sense, but can’t describe the finish any elaborately than this.]

Application:

Here is how my skin looks after applying the foundation. I haven’t used any other product on my face with the foundation except for some concealer under my eyes. I have let the foundation set first on its own, then I dusted Urban Decay’s Translucent powder on the T-zone.
The makeup was done around 12 pm. The following picture is taken in front of a window.
After the application, at 12 pm
Here is how the product looks in flash photography.

Here is how the foundation looks in broad daylight….the time was around 4 pm. As you can see, the area around my nose has become oily (which happens to me all the time).  Other than that, the foundation is set pretty well.
In daylight, at 4 pm.
Here is how the product looks at the end of the day…around 11 pm. Other than the oily nose-area and bridge of the nose where my glasses sit, there was no sliding off or dry patch on my skin.
By the way if you are wondering about this long lasting lip color which lasted for almost 11 hours even through lunch and without any touch-up. It is Makeup Forever Aqua Rouge no 10.
End of the day, 11pm.

So in a nutshell:

Pros:

  1. The product has lightweight buildable coverage.
  2. It didn’t break me out.
  3. Product blends really well.
  4. Some foundation gives a mask-like finish, BUT this foundation is not like that. It feels like I am not wearing any face product after using the product.
  5. It has SPF 20.

Cons:

  1. Face (or T-zone) gets oily after a while. This can be easily fixed with a blotting tissue or translucent powder. I used blotting tissue to get rid of the oil around my nose, which happens to me with any other foundation.
  2. The product will set into fine lines. So you have to set it with a setting powder.
  3. Price ($29) can be costly if you do not use foundation daily or going to use this foundation only in daytime party.

Dupe or almost dupe:

MAC Face & Body foundation
Physicians Formula Youthful Wear foundation
