Battle of Sunscreen – NEUTROGENA

by Wasifa Ahmad Hasan
Imagine this scenario; you are quite late for work or going to run for a quick errand. What is the one thing you are going to use?
Foundation, a dab of concealer or a quick swipe of your favorite lip color?
As tempting as it may seem, if you have chosen any of the above options you are doing great harm to your skin – daily.
You are forgetting the most important part –sunscreen.
Now you are annoyed and wondering, “Even in winter?”
Yes dear! Even in winter!
Those who have used sunscreen have experienced that these products can leave a white cast and stickiness on the face and sometimes these cause acne. But don’t worry! There are ways to prevent it

  • Use the sunscreen on freshly washed face.
  • Don’t use it like moisturizer. Instead of taking it onto your palms and then rubbing on the face; apply the sunscreen in little dots and massage well. Apply more if necessary.
  • Sunscreens need time to be absorbed into the skin to work. So they require a head start of about 20 minutes. Therefore apply the sunscreen 1st, then change your clothes, brush your hair etc.
  • Wash your face well after you get home…so that there is no residue product left behind on your skin.

Many of my readers are asking me what I use on my skin.
Well, I have used many brands and found the Neutrogena ones are better for my skin. But before you just go to the shop and buy one, be patient and read my experiences about Neutrogena sunscreen.
Today I am going to write about 4 Neutrogena products which I have been using for almost 2 years.

  • Neutrogena oil free moisture SPF 15
  • UVA/UVB sunblock lotion SPF 45
  • Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 45
  • Age Shield Face sunblock lotion SPF 90

So let’s get started!

  • This one is runnier (like a lotion).
  • The formula says oil-free but I didn’t like the oily/shiny look it gave to my face on summer. In my opinion it’s best for fall…when the skin is starting to dry out.
  • It does not work well under makeup.

How do I use it?
I use it when I am running outside for a quick errand or on my hands when they feel extra dry.
Shall I buy it again? – It’s a “may be”.

  • This formula is the thickest one I have ever used.
  • This one is good for you if you are vacationing on a sea-beach…because trust me; if you wear this sunscreen in your daily city life you will not like it at all!
  • It’s not ideal to use under makeup…your face will look blotchy.

How do I use it?
I have used it on my face when I was in Chennai [the sun there is harsher than Dhaka] and as a result I didn’t have any sun-burn (Thank God!). But in Dhaka’s weather, this sunscreen is way too thick and oily for my skin so I use it on my feet instead.
Shall I buy it again? – For my face-No!

  • This is the 3rd time I am buying this product. The oil-moisture balance is perfect for summer and my skin.
  • The formula is perfect for using under makeup. I have found that skin feel smooth after using this…perfect base for makeup.

How do I use it?
This one is better for face & neck but not for hands or feet.
Shall I buy it again? Yes – no doubt about that!

  • Every sunblock of Neutrogena has a distinctive chemical smell…But this one tops all the others.
  • My face looks oily after using it in summer. It’s best for dry skin or for winter time.
  • Liquid makeup products do not work well when you are wearing this sunblock. You have to use powder ones.

How do I use it?

When I have to be under the sun for prolong time, I use this one on my face and also my hands.

You can not stop the aging process which your are going to face eventually, but daily use of sunscreen protects your skin from the damage of UVA and UVB rays. Here is an example of a truck driver on how these rays can cause harm in late run. The left side of this patient has become more damaged and wrinkles are more there.Apparently left side was more exposed to the sun.

So do not worry about the white cast or extra effort of applying sunscreen. If you follow these processes I have mentioned above, you can also wear your makeup on it.

I am wearing Neutrogena Dry Touch Sunblock here. No white cast or greasy face, see?
