Recently I have joined Beauty Blogger Headquarters [a bloggers association].The January task is “How Do You Photograph For Your Blog?”
So let’s get started.
Before I start I have to say that
I am still learning ways to take better photos for my blog. The following
answers are based on what I have learnt and would like to learn.
What camera(s) do you use for your blog photography?
I use Canon 600D for the detailed
pictures, and iPhone 4s.
The canon is my brother’s camera, so I have to borrow from him to take
the pictures. I use it mainly for the makeup and portrait photos. For the
others, I use the iPhone cam.
What type of lighting do you use? Natural light, indoor light, studio lamps, etc.?
Lighting is always a problem for me when I am taking photos. I use
indoor lighting and studio lighting for the photos. The sunlight that comes in
my apartment is not enough to take photos, and even if I do so the pictures do
not show the true colors. So I have to rely on artificial lighting.
Do you use a specific background?
My background is pretty basic. I like to use neutral or blank backgrounds for the photographs. A blank off-white wall (in front of a mirror) in my room is usually the background for my photos.
What is your top photographing tip for a beginner blogger?
When you are a beginner, this is the thing that happens: you don’t know
which angle the light should go, how to focus on a particular object and what
is the good angle for you in the photos.
So just practice the focus, the lighting and work on the angle.
If your camera has different settings, then work on the macro setting
for closeup pictures and portrait setting for full face pictures. It has helped me a
lot.
Check out these 2 unedited photos. Can you notice the difference?
Both of the pictures are taken indoors. The 1st picture is
taken with flash and the 2nd one is taken without flash. The left one
looks more flattering whereas in the right one, the skin looks uneven.
Now check out these 2.
The only difference here is the position of the light. On the left one,
the light was positioned at my face level. On the right one, the light was
positioned under my face level. And you can see how much difference it makes!
For fun: If you could upgrade your photographing equipment today, what
would you buy?
I would buy a good camera of my
own so that I can practice more and carry it with me.
Good photographs give a great
impression of the blog. It makes the work easier while doing a pictorial and can
say a thousand words without writing a single column. It also shows the
creativity and hard work of the blogger.
So if you are serious and passionate
about your blog, do invest in a good camera (within budget of course!) and improve your photography
skills.

Great tips! I prefer natural sun light, although most of the time I have to rely on shooting indoors as well :(
